#001: Leaving Home, Getting Starter, First Battle

Diary Entry 1: Dreaming of Xonan

Dear Diary,

My name is Pir Oetrimi Edan, but everyone calls me PO Edan. And today, I am starting my very own adventure- An adventure to make friends, get stronger, and discover what it truly means to be a man.

It is time to leave this SNES behind, and forge out on my own!

All I have to do now, is tell my mother about my plans. I hope she goes for it, but you know how she can be… She’ll probably ask about my grades again, and pretend I am “Going out to play.” When will she realize that I am all grown up, at the ripe old age of 10? Hang on, Lunch is ready.

“Stop all of this nonsense, Piro. Have You finished Your homework?”

That was her response. I showed her my Potion, which every student receives at the end of the year once they’ve completed their summer homework. That seemed to convince her, but then she seemed almost sad, for a moment.

“All boys leave home someday,” She said. “It said so on TV! Now, have fun playing! Oh, by the way: Professor Oak was looking for You!”

The Pokémon Prof, huh? Looking for me? I suppose that that is as good a place as any to start my quest for friendship and glory. He’s always seemed to know what is going on in the world, and could easily point me in the right direction.

…Or he would, if he were here. Ugh. The only one I know here is crummy old IP Lox. His full name is Iput Prade Lox, but everyone shortens his name just like mine… Of course, he would say they shorten my name like his… They’ve called me that for at least 1 month and 3 days longer than you’ve been PO, Piro.

He is a bit older than me, and he absolutely never lets me forget it.

Never ever.

Whatever.

I left and went to stare across the small lake at the south end of town. It always calms me down when I get upset.

Time to set out on my own! To taste what this world has to offer, to strike the earth and make my mark. And, as with all good journeys (like Chrono and Mario and Kirby), this one begins with a single step.

screenshot

And well, crap. As soon as I set foot outside of town, who else but the Pokémon Prof would stop me? He says, “Wild Pokémon live in the tall grass! You are lucky I found You when I did, or you might have been hurt!” He had this crazed look in his eye, and kept looking around him suspiciously…

Even though I was in the grass, and he still wasn’t. Oh well.

“Follow me!” He says, and darts off back to town. With a sigh, I followed.

He led me back to his mansion-laboratory, and showed me three balls, telling me to take the one which seemed right for me. He told IP Lox that he’d get to choose from what came next.

Now, diary, I have always been a fan of the left hand rule: Whenever you need to choose, always go with the left-most option you haven’t done yet. But gosh dang if IP IP didn’t get this look in his eye almost immediately upon me reaching for the one on the left.

He kept looking at the one in the center, as if it might swim away if he took his eyes off of it.

screenshot

So, that is the one I took, naturally. Cursing under his breath, IP Lox took the one on the far right. Who knows what it was? But anyway, time to see what I have chosen.

A Squirtle, huh? Seems alright, and on first glance seems friendly enough. He even shook my hand, for what it was worth. For some reason, it seemed like he wanted me to give him a name.

Xonan.

That was the one I decided on, and he liked it well enough. He nodded his head, and then wanted to go rest back in his ball.

screenshot

A nice start, I think. He doesn’t seem too powerful, but he doesn’t seem weak either. Kinda like me, in a way.

Heh.

Anyway, I suppose it is time to set out! Let’s see how thing are gonna sha-

I cannot believe he challenged me!!!

We just got started, after all. Why challenge me so soon? It’s not like I’ve had a chance to raise Xonan at all yet, and he apparently chose some kind of Plant-Dinosaur!? I was really worried when I first saw it, but it seems to be mostly foliage, at least right now.

Go to it, Xonan!
